Do You Actually Need to Rent a Car?
YES — Rent a car if you:
- Want to reach Masca, Anaga mountains or Teno peninsula
- Plan to visit Teide National Park independently
- Are staying in a rural or non-resort area
- Want to explore multiple destinations in one trip
- Have 5+ days on the island
NO — Skip the car if you:
- Are staying in one resort for the whole trip (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Puerto de la Cruz)
- Plan to use TITSA buses and organized tours
- Are uncomfortable on narrow mountain roads or steep switchbacks
- Only visiting the beach + 1-2 local attractions
The most popular combination: rent a car for 2–3 days mid-trip to explore Teide, Masca and the north, then use buses for resort days.

What About International Brands?
Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar, Goldcar and Budget all operate at both Tenerife airports. Goldcar is often the cheapest headline price at TFN from around €23/day — but read the excess and insurance terms carefully before booking. International brands frequently add charges for insurance, GPS and extras at the desk that push the final cost well above the advertised rate.

Compare All CompaniesCar Rental Insurance in Tenerife — What You Actually Need
This is the section most sites get wrong. Plain language, no jargon.
Collision Damage Waiver
- Limits your liability if the car is damaged
- Does NOT cover tyres, windows, mirrors, roof or undercarriage unless specifically stated
- Always check what's excluded
Excess / Deductible
- The amount blocked on your credit card as a deposit
- In Tenerife this ranges from €80 to €2,300 depending on car and company
- To avoid: choose Cicar or Autoreisen — zero-excess insurance included
Theft Protection
- Covers theft of the vehicle
- Requires police report if claimed
- Usually included but verify
What to avoid
- Hard upselling at the rental desk for extra insurance you may not need
- Companies that advertise cheap rates but charge large excess deposits on arrival
- Signing without checking if glass, tyres and mirrors are covered
Always photograph the entire car — every scratch — before driving away
Get any existing damage noted in writing on the rental agreement
Check if your credit card already covers rental car damage
Never accept "pre-existing damage" charges — document everything

What's Driving in Tenerife Actually Like?
The good
- Drive on the right, steering wheel on the left (same as mainland Spain)
- Good main highways (TF-1) connecting south to north
- Free parking available in most towns
- Petrol prices below Spanish average due to oil refineries near Santa Cruz — budget-friendly to fill up
- EU driving licence fully accepted — no IDP needed for EU residents
- Most scenic mountain roads are paved and manageable
Watch out for
- Narrow switchback roads to Masca, Anaga and mountain villages
- Steep gradients — manual cars require hill-start confidence
- Traffic jams near Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz during commuting hours (avoid 8–9am and 5–7pm)
- Crowded viewpoint car parks — arrive early
- Car theft from tourist areas — never leave valuables visible
Fuel tip: Petrol stations are widely available. Fill up before heading into mountain areas like Teide National Park.
Places You Can Only Reach Properly by Car
Masca Village
The island's most dramatic village, perched in a volcanic gorge. Bus 355 from Santiago del Teide runs infrequently. With a car, you drive the breathtaking switchback road at your own pace.
Anaga Mountains
Ancient laurel forest and remote beaches in the northeast. Limited bus access — a car is almost essential for proper exploration of Playa de Benijo, Taganana and Roque de Taborno.
Teno Peninsula
The wild northwest corner. Almost no public transport. The road to Punta de Teno is one of the most spectacular on the island.
Teide National Park (self-drive)
Bus 342 runs once daily from Costa Adeje. With a car, arrive at sunrise before crowds, explore multiple viewpoints and stay for the sunset — impossible by bus.
Playa de Benijo
Wild black-sand beach on the Anaga coast. No public transport to the beach itself. Car access only.
Los Gigantes Cliffs
Bus 477 reaches the town, but the best cliff viewpoints require a car to reach.
